Low-dust litter vs sensor readings in Litter-Robot 4
Visible dust and inaccurate litter-level or drawer readings are different observations with overlapping but unproven causes.
Decision rail
Four checks, in order
Passing one check does not override a failure or unknown in the next. This is a compatibility decision, not a popularity ranking.
- 01Physical
Check the actual bed and drawer
Compare physical levels with the app before deciding the machine has a litter problem.
- 02Appearance
Record color and transparency
The official warning concerns light or translucent litter independently of visible dust.
- 03Cleaning
Use maker-recommended sensor care
Observe whether readings change after appropriate cleaning without claiming that dust was the proven cause.
- 04Evidence
Do not convert marketing into a test
Low-dust wording and one report are not controlled particulate or sensor measurements.

What Litter-Robot actually says
These statements describe classes and limits. They are not PawExact tests and do not automatically approve every product using the same marketing term.
“Some silica gel litter beads and crystals can also be used with Litter-Robot, as long as they pass through the screen. However, translucent or white-colored litter (most often seen in crystal litter) may impact the litter level and Drawer Full Indicator (DFI) accuracy in Litter-Robot 4 and are therefore not recommended.”Official source

Keep each observation with its original conditions
Keep a light-crystal reading concern apart from a different home's favorable visual dust observation; neither supplies a dust-to-sensor causal comparison.

Stop transfer: The records use different formulas and households. No simultaneous physical level, displayed level, cleaning state, and measured dust series is shared between them.
Before a larger purchase
A small, observable first-use check
This is not a controlled test protocol. It is a way to notice an obvious mismatch before treating one successful cycle as proof.
- Check 1Record physical litter and drawer levels beside app readings.
- Check 2Note exact SKU, color, transparency, fill height, firmware, and lighting.
- Check 3Photograph visible dust before and after maker-recommended cleaning.
- Check 4Keep cycling, level sensing, drawer sensing, and dust as separate result fields.
Known limits
What the current evidence cannot prove
- No dust-mass or sensor-error threshold has been measured by PawExact.
- Reports do not isolate firmware, cleaning state, light, fill depth, or formula batch.
- A correlation between dust and a reading mismatch does not establish causation.
Evidence readiness
What this guide can support today
This checkpoint separates a useful answer from claims the current official rules and exact records still cannot support. It is an editorial evidence review, not a PawExact test.
- Question scope
- Compare the physical bed and drawer with their displayed levels before treating a low-dust label as a sensor outcome. For Hopper households, also record the calibrated target and whether a refill was due on the next cycle.
- Direct official boundary
- The current LR4 FAQ says translucent or white litter may affect level and Drawer Full Indicator accuracy and is not recommended; Hopper uses those readings at cycle end to decide a later refill. Neither statement sets a dust threshold or makes dust the proven cause of a mismatch.
- Exact-product evidence
- Three accepted PrettyLitter Original reports retain light-crystal reading or dust context. Positive dust observations for Cloud Control and Ever Clean do not include controlled sensor comparisons, so no cross-product sensor ranking is supported.
- Remaining gap
- No accepted report isolates dust from color, physical fill, firmware, cleaning, or Hopper calibration. Without simultaneous physical and displayed readings, a low-dust product claim cannot certify sensing; the broader issue page also covers this symptom.
Intent boundary
Keep the next question narrower
Use this page when visible dust and app or machine readings are being conflated. It keeps surface residue, litter color, physical bed level, cleaning state, and displayed readings as separate fields.
