Change-control guide

Switching cat litter in Litter-Robot 4: an evidence checklist

Preserve the old and new exact SKUs, change one variable at a time, and observe clumping, screening, sensing, and tracking separately.

Decision rail

Four checks, in order

Passing one check does not override a failure or unknown in the next. This is a compatibility decision, not a popularity ranking.

  1. 01Before

    Save the outgoing setup

Record exact old SKU, fill level, delay, sensor state, cleaning, mat, cats, and observed problems before changing anything.

  2. 02Identity

    Save the new exact package

Capture the full product name, weight variant, material, clumping behavior, and formula or package date.

  3. 03Observe

    Separate six outcomes

Track clump integrity, liner release, clean-litter loss, dust, sensor readings, and floor tracking independently.

  4. 04Decide

    Wait for repeated cycles

One cycle can detect an obvious mismatch but cannot establish maintenance, saturation, formula stability, or long-term fit.

Evidence transfer ledger

How far this evidence can travel

A report stays attached to the identity and conditions it actually names. Each unresolved mismatch stops transfer; similarity alone does not fill the missing field.

Before state

Save the outgoing SKU and machine setup

Can support
A before-and-after sequence within the same LR4 household.
Stop transfer when
The original fill, delay, cleaning state, sensor state, or observed symptom was not recorded.
Changed variable

Identify what changed with the new litter

Can support
A cautious association when the litter is the main recorded change.
Stop transfer when
Litter, fill, delay, liner treatment, firmware, mat, and cleaning routine changed together.
Exact new product

Capture formula, weight, material, and package date

Can support
An observation tied to the exact new SKU.
Stop transfer when
The result is transferred to a sibling scent, lightweight version, grain size, or later unverified package.
Repeated observation

Retain cycle count and duration

Can support
The specific failure modes seen across the reported observation window.
Stop transfer when
One clean cycle becomes proof of long-term release, moisture, sensing, maintenance, or tracking.
Causal claim

Describe sequence without claiming sole cause

Can support
The fact that an outcome changed after the switch under recorded conditions.
Stop transfer when
The sequence is used to prove the old litter alone caused the issue or that the new litter will work elsewhere.

Published boundary

What Litter-Robot actually says

These statements describe classes and limits. They are not PawExact tests and do not automatically approve every product using the same marketing term.

OfficialLitter-Robot 4
“We recommend a high-quality, standard-weight, clay-based clumping litter”
Official source
OfficialLitter-Robot 4
“Some silica gel litter beads and crystals can also be used with Litter-Robot, as long as they pass through the screen. However, translucent or white-colored litter (most often seen in crystal litter) may impact the litter level and Drawer Full Indicator (DFI) accuracy in Litter-Robot 4 and are therefore not recommended.”

“Alternative, plant-based litters typically do not work with Litter-Robot as these may not be filtered properly through the sifting system.”

“Litters that do not work in Litter-Robot are the strictly absorbent, non-clumping or loose-clumping litters, newspaper-based litters, and absorbent wood pellet litter.”

Exact-product records

Products that show why the class label is not enough

These records show why a switch should preserve exact identity and separate outcomes: positive overall reports can omit tracking or maintenance, while a low-tracking result can still include screen loss.

A small, observable first-use check

This is not a controlled test protocol. It is a way to notice an obvious mismatch before treating one successful cycle as proof.

  1. Check 1Do not change litter, cycle delay, fill depth, liner treatment, and cleaning routine at the same time.
  2. Check 2Keep the new bed within the maker’s fill boundary and compare its physical level with the app.
  3. Check 3Inspect the liner, screen return, waste drawer, sensors, step, mat, and nearby floor after repeated cycles.
  4. Check 4Stop the comparison and use manufacturer troubleshooting if the unit shows a persistent cycle, sensor, pinch, drawer, motor, or obstruction fault.

Known limits

What the current evidence cannot prove

  • This checklist is an observation method, not a controlled PawExact product test.
  • A home switch cannot fully control humidity, cat output, cleaning state, firmware, liner age, or package batch.
  • An improvement after switching establishes sequence, not proof that the previous litter alone caused the problem.

Evidence readiness

What this guide can support today

This checkpoint separates a useful answer from claims the current official rules and exact records still cannot support. It is an editorial evidence review, not a PawExact test.

Question scope
Before replacing a bag, record the old and new exact SKU, physical fill, displayed level, delay, cleaning, and old-litter residue. After the switch, classify a changed drawer sample before attributing it to the new formula.
Direct official boundary
Today's LR4 FAQ keeps the standard-weight clay preference and plant, crystal, and non-clumping limits; its no-cycle support page says to remove overfill but also lists non-litter causes. A switch does not establish causality if setup or machine state changed at the same time.
Exact-product evidence
Existing exact-product records show why SKU identity, formula, delay, fill, cleaning, and household context must remain attached. They do not establish one universal transition period.
Remaining gap
No accepted record holds old/new formulas, residual mix, target fill, delay, cleaning, and repeated-cycle count constant as a controlled transition. The maker publishes no cycle count that certifies stability, so this remains a comparison method.

Intent boundary

Keep the next question narrower

Use this page after the old and new formulas are identified. Keep fill, delay, cleaning, cats, and residual old litter separate before attributing a new symptom to the new bag; then follow the observed drawer material or reading to the narrow diagnostic page.
