Can you use crystal litter in Litter-Robot 4?

Some crystals may pass the screen, but clumping behavior, particle fit, and sensor visibility create separate limits.

Decision rail

Four checks, in order

Passing one check does not override a failure or unknown in the next. This is a compatibility decision, not a popularity ranking.

  1. 01Screen

    Particles must separate correctly

A crystal product can only fit the published boundary when its particles pass through the LR4 screen during a cycle.

  2. 02Clumping

Absorbent is not the same as clumping

LR4 also excludes strictly absorbent, non-clumping or loose-clumping litter. A crystal label alone does not resolve this conflict.

  3. 03Sensors

    Color and transparency may matter

The maker specifically warns that translucent or white litter may affect litter-level and Drawer Full Indicator accuracy.

  4. 04Exact record

    Use the SKU-level evidence

PrettyLitter Original has three reviewed conditional reports. Other crystal products in the catalog remain rule-based estimates.

What Litter-Robot actually says

These statements describe classes and limits. They are not PawExact tests and do not automatically approve every product using the same marketing term.

OfficialLitter-Robot 4
“Some silica gel litter beads and crystals can also be used with Litter-Robot, as long as they pass through the screen. However, translucent or white-colored litter (most often seen in crystal litter) may impact the litter level and Drawer Full Indicator (DFI) accuracy in Litter-Robot 4 and are therefore not recommended.”

OfficialLitter-Robot 4
“Litters that do not work in Litter-Robot are the strictly absorbent, non-clumping or loose-clumping litters, newspaper-based litters, and absorbent wood pellet litter.”

Exact-product records

Products that show why the class label is not enough

One product has three reviewed LR4 reports; the other remains a class-rule estimate. Neither record proves that every crystal formula behaves the same way.

Before a larger purchase

A small, observable first-use check

This is not a controlled test protocol. It is a way to notice an obvious mismatch before treating one successful cycle as proof.

  1. Check 1Confirm that the exact product is the same formula shown in the PawExact record; clumping and non-clumping versions are not interchangeable.
  2. Check 2Start with the maker’s fill guidance and watch whether clean particles return through the screen instead of entering the waste drawer.
  3. Check 3Compare the physical fill level with the app reading during the first cycles; do not assume a low reading means the globe is actually low.
  4. Check 4Stop treating the pair as a fit if cycles leave pooled liquid, usable litter is repeatedly discarded, or sensor readings become unreliable.

Known limits

What the current evidence cannot prove

  • PawExact has not measured particle-size distributions for the crystal products in this catalog.
  • The reviewed reports do not isolate firmware, ambient light, cleaning state, fill height, or formula changes.
  • A successful cycle does not prove long-term odor, dust, sensor, or waste performance.
