Mixture field guide

Can you mix two cat litters in Litter-Robot 4?

A mixture is its own setup. Keep both exact products, the ratio, fill level, cycle delay, and household conditions attached to every result.

Decision rail

Four checks, in order

Passing one check does not override a failure or unknown in the next. This is a compatibility decision, not a popularity ranking.

  1. 01Two exact products

    Save both package identities

Brand names are not enough. Record the full formula and grain variant for each component so a later result is not transferred to a different SKU.

  2. 02Ratio

Treat the blend as a recipe

A 4:1 blend is not the same setup as 70:30 or 40:60. Preserve the ratio and whether it was measured or estimated by eye.

  3. 03Machine boundary

    Keep total fill below MAX

Mixing does not override LR4’s preferred material class or its fill limit. Additional weight from overfilling can prevent normal cycling.

  4. 04Observed conditions

    Carry the household context

Cycle delay, fill depth, cat output, humidity, cleaning and drawer intervals can change the result. Keep them attached to the observation.

Evidence transfer ledger

How far this evidence can travel

A report stays attached to the identity and conditions it actually names. Each unresolved mismatch stops transfer; similarity alone does not fill the missing field.

Machine identity

Litter-Robot 4 must stay explicit

Can support
An observation about the named recipe in LR4 under the reported setup.
Stop transfer when
The source says only Litter-Robot, names another generation, or leaves the machine unresolved.
Two product identities

Preserve both exact formulas and variants

Can support
The named two-product mixture, not either brand family and not either component alone.
Stop transfer when
One component is described only by brand, material, or an ambiguous family name.
Recipe

Carry the ratio and grain variant

Can support
A result for the reported 4:1, 70:30, or 40:60 recipe when the same components are used.
Stop transfer when
The ratio changes, is unknown, or a Large Grain record is applied to Mixed Grain or another package.
Operating context

Retain fill, delay, cats, and maintenance

Can support
A narrow comparison when the material operating conditions remain reasonably similar.
Stop transfer when
A different fill depth, cycle delay, drawer interval, or household load could explain the outcome.
Conclusion scope

Treat one recipe as one household report

Can support
The reported clump, sticking, odor, tracking, or maintenance observation exactly as recorded.
Stop transfer when
The claim becomes a best ratio, a success rate, proof for arbitrary mixtures, or proof that either component works alone.

What Litter-Robot actually says

Reviewed mixture records

Three recipes, three household contexts

These are three independent public reports, not PawExact tests. All three name Litter-Robot 4, both products and a ratio; they do not establish a universal best mixture.

Conditional

A 40/60 Naturally Fresh Multi-Cat and Sustainably Yours Large Grain mix worked well under a seven-minute delay when the bed stayed sufficiently full; the author reported harder cassava clumps, softer walnut clumps and a 3-4 day drawer interval.

Conditions kept with this record: Keep the bed from getting too low; empty the drawer every 3-4 days; the author warns that longer drawer intervals can permit mold.

Outcome
Good

An approximate 70/30 BoxiePro grey-bag and Sustainably Yours Large Grain mix produced no reported clumping, smearing or odor problems, with occasional maintenance and a full wash every couple of months.

Conditions kept with this record: Ratio was estimated by eye; light maintenance cleaning continued and a full dump and wash occurred every couple of months; household included high-aim cats.

Outcome
Good

A roughly 4:1 Frisco Unscented Clumping Clay and Sustainably Yours Large Grain mix worked quite well in the author's LR4 units; the stated purpose was to retain the plant litter's benefits while controlling cost and machine-fit concerns.

Conditions kept with this record: The author used multiple LR4 units and described the ratio as approximate; no cycle delay, duration or cat count was supplied.

Before a larger purchase

A small, observable first-use check

This is not a controlled test protocol. It is a way to notice an obvious mismatch before treating one successful cycle as proof.

  1. Check 1Photograph both current package names and note each grain or weight variant before combining them.
  2. Check 2Measure the starting ratio, mix thoroughly, and keep the combined bed just below the raised MAX line rather than adding two normal fill amounts.
  3. Check 3Record cycle delay, cat count, high-volume or edge-peeing behavior, humidity, fill depth, and cleaning changes before judging the mixture.
  4. Check 4Inspect clump release, smearing, clean-litter loss, dust, tracking, level readings, and drawer moisture separately across several cycles.
  5. Check 5If performance changes, avoid changing the ratio, cycle delay and liner treatment at once; otherwise the result cannot identify which change mattered.

Known limits

What the current evidence cannot prove

  • PawExact has not bench-tested these mixtures or measured density, clump strength, screen loss, sensor response, or motor load.
  • All three accepted reports contain Sustainably Yours, so they cannot support a rule for arbitrary two-litter combinations.
  • The reports cover three households and different recipes. They cannot establish the best ratio or how often a problem will occur.
  • A good mixture result does not prove that either component would produce the same result alone.

Evidence readiness

What this guide can support today

This checkpoint separates a useful answer from claims the current official rules and exact records still cannot support. It is an editorial evidence review, not a PawExact test.

Question scope
This guide asks whether one named two-SKU recipe under one LR4 setup can be interpreted. Record both bags and ratio before inspecting physical fill, clean-particle loss, or clump residue; a successful refill or cycle is not a recipe-wide verdict.
Direct official boundary
The current LR4 FAQ still prefers standard-weight clay and warns that plant alternatives may filter poorly. The troubleshooting page says to remove litter above the fill line. Mixing cannot override either material warning or the combined bed's physical fill boundary.
Exact-product evidence
Three independent accepted reports name LR4, both products, and a ratio. Every accepted recipe includes Sustainably Yours, so the records cannot be generalized to unrelated clay-plus-plant combinations.
Remaining gap
The three accepted recipes all contain Sustainably Yours and do not isolate either ingredient's effect. Ratio, grain variant, fill, delay, and cleanup are not held constant across households, so no best proportion or other-family transfer is supported.

Intent boundary

Keep the next question narrower

Use this page for a two-product LR4 recipe whose exact components and ratio are known. A mixed walnut report is not solo walnut evidence, and a successful recipe does not override either ingredient's published material boundary.
