Litter tracking outside the box

Tracking describes litter carried beyond the machine, not whether a product can form clumps, pass the screen, or avoid sensor problems. The same product can be compatible and still track heavily in one household.

Official boundaries related to this issue

These statements are included only when they directly concern the failure mode. They do not name every SKU shown below.

No current machine rule in the PawExact dataset directly defines this symptom. Product observations below must not be presented as an official compatibility limit.

Use the signal carefully

Measure the symptom without confusing it with compatibility

A low-tracking claim can matter to a household, but it cannot override clumping, screening, sensor, or official material limits.

  1. Check 1Note whether particles collect at the step, on a mat, or farther into the room; these are different tracking patterns.
  2. Check 2Record coat length, paw condition, mat and exit setup when comparing your result with a public report.
  3. Check 3Check the exact SKU record for sticking, screening and sensor tradeoffs before choosing it only for a low-tracking claim.

Observation language

Record the observation before naming the cause

Use concrete, repeatable descriptions. Each line below separates what can be seen from conditions that must stay separate and conclusions the observation cannot support.

  1. 01Same-home contrast

One cat shows different floor and drawer outcomes

    Observable
The same LR4 owner describes a long-haired cat with high tracking on one exact formula and no tracking on another, while the latter has a separate clean-litter-loss warning.
    Record separately
Keep both complete SKU names, the same-cat context, mat and fill details, and the two distinct outcomes; do not count the paired reports as independent households.
    Cannot infer
The contrast does not prove coat length caused tracking, establish a low-tracking winner, or show that the formula with less floor spread fits the screen better.
    Comparable when
Use this as a within-household clue only when product, mat, fill, and observation window are named; compare floor and drawer outcomes on separate lines.
  2. 02Distance

Particles stop at the step or entry mat

    Observable
Loose grains collect mainly on the machine step, immediately outside the opening, or within the first mat section.
    Record separately
Record the mat, exit direction, cleaning interval, fill level, and particle appearance rather than using only a low-tracking label.
    Cannot infer
Near-exit scatter does not prove that the litter never travels farther, and it says nothing about clumping, screening, or sensor behavior.
    Comparable when
Compare the same floor area after the same interval and routine before judging whether a setup change altered the pattern.
  3. 03Carry pattern

Particles appear beyond the immediate exit zone

    Observable
Similar-looking grains are found along a walking route or in rooms beyond the step and mat rather than only beside the machine.
    Record separately
Note distance bands, floor type, mat layout, coat length, paw condition, static, humidity, and time since the last cleaning.
    Cannot infer
Distance alone cannot identify whether paws, coat, jumping, kicking, airflow, or another household source moved the particles.
    Comparable when
Keep collection areas and time windows consistent; otherwise two floor checks are not comparable.
  4. 04Particle identity

Tracked grains match the litter bed

    Observable
Collected particles visibly resemble the current product rather than clump fragments, old litter, floor debris, or material from another box.
    Record separately
Record multiple litter boxes, recent transitions or mixtures, broken clumps, and cleaning carryover as separate possible sources.
    Cannot infer
Visual similarity is not a controlled source test and cannot establish how much material left the machine.
    Comparable when
A transition comparison needs the old and new materials cleared or explicitly documented instead of assuming every grain belongs to the new SKU.
  5. 05Tradeoff

Floor tracking changes while drawer waste also changes

    Observable
A setup produces a different floor pattern and, separately, a different amount or type of material in the waste drawer.
    Record separately
Log floor spread and drawer contents as two outcomes, with clean grains distinguished from wet fragments.
    Cannot infer
Less floor spread does not prove better overall compatibility, and more drawer material is not automatically the same failure as tracking.
    Comparable when
Keep both outcomes visible when comparing products so improvement in one does not erase a tradeoff in the other.

Continue by model or mechanism

Use the route that matches your observation

These links narrow a broad symptom into a machine-specific or mechanism-specific check. They do not turn a report into a universal fix.

Long-haired cat context

One cat, two products, different tradeoffs

These are two exact-product observations from the same LR4 owner and the same long-haired cat. They are useful as a within-household contrast, but they are still one household—not two independent samples.

Shared contextLitter-Robot 4 · one long-haired catSame owner and source; no controlled tracking measurement
Single reportHigh tracking reported

BoxiePro Deep Clean Probiotic

Boxiecat · Litter-Robot 4

The owner said the litter tracked badly for their long-haired cat even with the LR4 mat. This is a household-specific warning, not proof that the coat caused the result.

Single reportNo tracking reported

Really Great Cat Litter

Tuft + Paw · Litter-Robot 4

The same owner reported no tracking, but also said the long particles could miss the filtering gate above a low fill level and send unused litter to the drawer.

What to carry forward: record coat length and mat setup because they make a report easier to compare with your home. Do not infer that long hair alone predicts tracking, and do not treat “no tracking” as proof of good screening or complete compatibility.

Purina Tidy Cats · Litter-Robot 4

After several months with an LR4 and two cats, the owner reports that Tidy Cats 24/7 Performance left white clumped-litter residue and contributed to a setup with litter spread widely around the machine.

Original Health Monitoring Litter

PrettyLitter · Litter-Robot 4

After roughly four months the author said the original non-clumping PrettyLitter worked almost perfectly in LR4, but the app always read the litter as low; a 2026 update says the combination still works well.

What this page cannot prove

PawExact has not measured tracked mass or distance under controlled conditions. Cat coat, paw shape, exit behavior, mats, fill level, static, humidity, and cleaning routines are not standardized across the selected reports.
