Screening and litter waste

A rotating litter box must separate clumps while returning usable litter. Particle size, shape, and clump integrity can change what passes through the screen.

Official boundaries related to this issue

These statements are included only when they directly concern the failure mode. They do not name every SKU shown below.

“Some silica gel litter beads and crystals can also be used with Litter-Robot, as long as they pass through the screen. However, translucent or white-colored litter (most often seen in crystal litter) may impact the litter level and Drawer Full Indicator (DFI) accuracy in Litter-Robot 4 and are therefore not recommended.”

“Alternative, plant-based litters typically do not work with Litter-Robot as these may not be filtered properly through the sifting system.”

“Litters that do not work in Litter-Robot are the strictly absorbent, non-clumping or loose-clumping litters, newspaper-based litters, and absorbent wood pellet litter.”

Use the signal carefully

Watch where clean litter goes during separation

The useful question is not whether the globe rotates. It is whether clumps separate while clean particles return through the screen.

  1. Check 1Inspect the waste drawer for visibly clean litter after early cycles and note the exact product and fill level.
  2. Check 2Distinguish particles that fail to pass the screen from weak clumps that break apart during rotation.
  3. Check 3Do not convert an unmeasured impression into a waste percentage; a useful report needs repeated observations or weighed material.

Observation language

Record the observation before naming the cause

Use concrete, repeatable descriptions. Each line below separates what can be seen from conditions that must stay separate and conclusions the observation cannot support.

  1. 01Transition carryover

Discarded grains may belong to the previous bag

    Observable
Dry particles in the drawer resemble an earlier formula after a litter change or mixture, while the current bed contains more than one visible particle type.
    Record separately
Record the old and new complete SKU names, whether the bed was emptied, the mixing period, particle appearance, and which cycles produced the drawer material.
    Cannot infer
A visually similar grain cannot establish its formula of origin or prove that the new product failed the screen; no clean-litter loss rate follows from a mixed drawer.
    Comparable when
Interpret a new-formula observation only after carryover is cleared or explicitly documented and the same machine, fill, and inspection interval are preserved.
  2. 02Material state

Dry clean particles reach the waste drawer

    Observable
Drawer material looks unused, dry, and similar to litter still in the bed, without wet faces or clump residue.
    Record separately
Record exact SKU, particle shape, fill level, machine model, and whether the material appeared after one cycle or accumulated across several.
    Cannot infer
An unweighed handful does not establish a waste percentage, and one small particle does not describe the product’s full size distribution.
    Comparable when
Compare repeated cycles with the same fill and formula before describing the observation as persistent clean-litter loss.
  3. 03Fragment state

Wet or coated pieces enter the drawer

    Observable
Discarded pieces have damp surfaces, torn edges, irregular clump shapes, or visible waste coating.
    Record separately
Record clump formation, release, and breakage before counting these pieces together with dry unused litter.
    Cannot infer
Wet fragments do not prove that clean particles failed the screen, even if both materials are present in the same drawer.
    Comparable when
Sort and photograph material classes separately before changing delay, litter, or fill level.
  4. 04Return path

Usable litter remains on the waste side

    Observable
During separation, visibly clean material does not return to the bed and continues toward the drawer or bin.
    Record separately
Keep screen fit, particle orientation, clump obstruction, machine cleanliness, and the exact model as distinct observations.
    Cannot infer
The behavior cannot be transferred to another machine’s screen, and it does not identify a numeric particle threshold unless that model publishes one.
    Comparable when
A useful comparison keeps the machine and product fixed and records whether the same return-path behavior repeats.
  5. 05Fill boundary

Loss changes with the physical litter level

    Observable
The amount or path of discarded material appears different after the bed is physically leveled or brought below the marked fill boundary.
    Record separately
Record the physical bed against the machine mark separately from an app level reading and separately from product weight class.
    Cannot infer
A change after leveling does not prove that fill was the only cause or that the exact product will screen correctly at every allowed level.
    Comparable when
Do not change formula and fill together; preserve the first setup as the comparison baseline.

Low Tracking & Dust Control

World's Best Cat Litter · Litter-Robot 4

An LR4 user reports that the large orange-bag Low Tracking pellets can pair up in the grate, miss the septum during cycling, and roll into the waste chute.

Really Great Cat Litter

Tuft + Paw · Litter-Robot 4

An LR4 owner reports that Really Great Cat Litter does not track for their long-haired cat, but above roughly 20% of the fill line its long particles do not fully pass the filtering gate and unused litter is dumped into the bin.

Original Health Monitoring Litter

PrettyLitter · Litter-Robot 4

After roughly four months the author said the original non-clumping PrettyLitter worked almost perfectly in LR4, but the app always read the litter as low; a 2026 update says the combination still works well.

What this page cannot prove

Public reports of litter waste do not provide standardized particle measurements or waste weights. Use maker limits as the boundary and treat reports as pair-specific warnings.
