LR5 material guide
Can you use crystal litter in Litter-Robot 5?
LR5 allows some small screen-fitting silica beads or crystals, but non-clumping behavior and light-litter sensing remain separate limits.
Decision rail
Four checks, in order
Passing one check does not override a failure or unknown in the next. This is a compatibility decision, not a popularity ranking.
- 01Screen
Require particle pass-through
A crystal marketing label does not prove that the exact granules return through LR5’s screen.
- 02Capture
Keep non-clumping behavior visible
Absorption and clumping are different; the separate non-clumping exclusion still matters.
- 03Sensors
Compare physical and displayed levels
Light or translucent material may affect level and drawer readings even when cycles complete.
- 04Evidence
Do not import LR4 reports
An LR4 observation stays tied to LR4 until a source explicitly confirms LR5.

What Litter-Robot 5 actually says
These statements describe classes and limits. They are not PawExact tests and do not automatically approve every product using the same marketing term.
“Some silica gel litter beads and crystals can also be used with Litter-Robot, as long as they pass through the screen. However, translucent or white-colored litter (most often seen in crystal litter) may impact the litter level and Drawer Full Indicator (DFI) accuracy in Litter-Robot 5 and are therefore not recommended.”Official source
“Litters that do not work in Litter-Robot are the strictly absorbent, non-clumping or loose-clumping litters, newspaper-based litters, and absorbent wood pellet litter.”Official source
Official boundary review
What the source supports—and where to stop
The LR5 crystal exception, where particle pass-through, non-clumping behavior, and light-litter sensing have to be evaluated separately. Editorial review completed 2026-10-02; official source last verified 2026-10-02. This is not a PawExact test.
- Direct wording
- Some crystals may pass; light colors are not recommendedLitter-Robot says some silica beads and crystals can be used if they pass through the screen. The current source says translucent or white-colored litter may affect litter-level and Drawer Full Indicator accuracy and is therefore not recommended; strictly absorbent non-clumping litter is separately listed among types that do not work.
- How it applies
- A screen pass cannot clear the other two gatesObserve whether dry clean particles return through LR5's own screen, identify whether the exact crystal formula clumps or only absorbs, and compare physical fill and drawer state with displayed values. No numeric LR5 screen aperture or complete approved-crystal SKU list is provided by the recorded source.
- Exact-product record
- Crystal examples have no accepted LR5 use reportsPrettyLitter Original and PetSafe ScoopFree Premium Crystal appear as class-rule examples here and remain Estimated on LR5. The accepted PrettyLitter household reports identify LR4, so they cannot establish LR5 screen return, moisture behavior, or reading accuracy for either example.
- Stop condition
- Stop if the formula or sensor context is unknownDo not infer an LR5 result from a crystal label, a single grain, or a successful cycle. If representative particles, current package, clumping mode, repeated screen return, physical versus app levels, or saturation state are unrecorded, retain only the conditional manufacturer boundary.

A small, observable first-use check
This is not a controlled test protocol. It is a way to notice an obvious mismatch before treating one successful cycle as proof.
- Check 1Match the exact crystal formula and current package.
- Check 2Watch whether clean crystals return through the screen.
- Check 3Compare physical fill and drawer levels with app readings.
- Check 4Inspect saturation, moisture, dust, and cleanup after repeated cycles.
Known limits
What the current evidence cannot prove
- No accepted exact-crystal LR5 report is currently recorded.
- The source does not publish a complete approved-crystal SKU list or universal particle measurement.
- PawExact has not tested long-term moisture, dust, or sensor behavior in LR5.
